| Abstract: |
This paper emphasizes the need to simulate with great precision the geometry of engines and their ducting
if accuracy of correlation with performance characteristics and with measured pressure diagrams is to be
expected. A high-performance, single-cylinder, motocross motorcycle engine of 400 cm3 capacity is
instrumented and the performance characteristics are measured over a wide speed range as well as pressure
diagrams in the intake and exhaust systems. These measurements are correlated with the theoretical results
given by a sophisticated 1D engine simulation package. The modeling of the absorption silencer attached to
this engine is studied in detail.
